This is an art form that is named after the sound it makes. These artists, wearing white shirt, white dhoti, black coat, red turban go around early in the mornings making bud-budak’ sound from the small drum they hold in his hand. This instrument made of wood covered either side with deer or goat’s skin is also called Bud-budak. Budabukkalas are seen in many parts of the state but mainly in Srikakulam, East Godavari, Guntur, Prakasam and Nalgonda districts. In other parts also their presence is a must during Sankranti. They literally wake people in rural areas with their bud-budak sound. Budabukkalas are also called Ramjogies, Sayilavallu. They start their songs with a special prayer to goddess Amba followed by prayers to other deities. Budabukkala is mentioned in many a literary work. |
